Gainesville, VA – After being in office less than a month, Gainesville District Supervisor Pete Candland is already delivering results for the citizens of Western Prince William County.

At his first town hall meeting, Supervisor Candland announced that VDOT has agreed to approve the installation of a traffic signal at the intersection of Rt 15 and Waverly Farm Rd. This intersection is slated to open in 2012 and has received considerable attention in recent months due to its proximity to three schools and a large church. The traffic signal was originally denied by VDOT, but after revisiting the issue, they have decided to approve the project and move quickly to see it completed.

The reversal from VDOT came as a result of a coordinated effort on the part of Supervisor Candland, local concerned citizens, and the county’s legislative delegation. “There was a team effort in Richmond led by Delegate Tim Hugo (R-40th District), with considerable help from Senator Dick Black (R-13th District), Delegate David Ramadan (R-87th District), and Delegate Bob Marshall (R-13th District). These public servants were united in a commitment to solve this problem and ensure that this intersection is as safe as possible for travelers,” said Candland.
Candland characterized the success in convincing VDOT to approve the traffic signal as a “textbook model for how problems need to be resolved where local and state elected officials work closely together to achieve success.”

“This is truly a safety issue for the citizens in this neighborhood and the many families with children who will use this intersection on a daily basis. The possibility of even one life being at risk is simply unacceptable, and I’m happy to see progress from VDOT on reconsidering and eventually approving this project,” added Candland.

Supervisor Candland went to action immediately to find a remedy for this dangerous intersection by seeking input from constituents, talking with the developer, meeting with VDOT, contacting members of the General Assembly and sending a letter directly to Secretary of Transportation, Sean Connaughton. Delegate Hugo agreed, saying, “When Pete and I first discussed this issue, we knew getting this signal approved had to be a high priority, and we are grateful for the considerable work from Delegate Ramadan in getting to a resolution of this issue. Equally impressive is the outstanding leadership Pete Candland demonstrated in only the first month of his service to the citizens of the Gainesville District.”

Richmond, VA | January 17, 2012—Delegate David Ramadan (R-87th District) announced today that he has joined Delegates Barbara Comstock and Tim Hugo as the Chief Co-Patron of legislation that allows for competitive bidding on taxpayer-funded public works projects.

“The Fair and Open Competition in Government Contracting Act (HB33) removes a major impediment to the progress of Phase 2 of the Dulles Rail Project,” said Ramadan. The freshman Delegate noted that Project Labor Agreements (PLA) favored by unions would drive up construction costs for the Dulles Rail Project, adding hundreds of millions of dollars in unnecessary taxpayer expense to this project.

Ramadan pointed out that PLA mandates are met with forceful opposition from U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, the Virginia Chamber of Commerce and the Loudoun and Fairfax County Boards of Supervisors, among others.

“Extending Metro Rail into the 87th District,” Ramadan underscored, “is key to stimulating increased economic development and job creation and reducing congestion in the District and the surrounding area. This legislation will not only make the project more feasible but also more financially viable and aligned with our Commonwealth’s right-to-work status.”

Best regards from Richmond. The 2012 legislative session of the Virginia General Assembly will open on Wednesday, January 11th, and concludes on March 10th.

I am honored and excited to represent you in Mr. Jefferson’s Capitol. Although I will be absent from the District for two months I will be available to all of you via e-mail and telephone – see details below. Further, as a general rule I’ll drive home every other weekend, so I will be available for in-person meetings and events.

Our state government faces significant budget challenges. My colleagues and I at the General Assembly will have to cut programs to balance the budget, which will mean hard choices and sacrifice.  I’m willing to lead by example when it comes to sharing the sacrifice.  That’s why I decided to reduce my Delegate salary by 20 percent.

As a citizen legislator, I’ll rely on your advice and opinions to be a more effective representative. “As I take office at the start of a new legislative session, I confront the stark reality of many budget challenges that must be offset by deep spending cuts to achieve a constitutionally mandated balanced budget,” said Ramadan.

The Republican, who will commence his official duties on January 11, made clear he is willing to make hard choices on cuts to programs.  During the campaign, he proposed an across-the-board cut to targeted programs to fund local and state transportation improvement priorities.

“You can’t ask others to do what you’re not willing to do yourself.  That’s not leadership; it’s hypocrisy.  That’s why I have decided to reduce my Delegate salary by 20 percent. Given the state’s financial situation and the economy’s condition overall, it’s the right and responsible thing to do,” said Ramadan.

The soon-to-be Delegate emphasized his decision is not about the size of the cut but the principle behind it.  “In my view, we need to lead by example and sharing the sacrifice we’re asking others to make is one way to demonstrate that.  Taxpayers and families have trimmed their budgets and are getting by on less or doing without, why shouldn’t their elected representatives do the same?” asked Ramadan.
